How do you measure shoulder-to-waist ratio?

Shoulder-to-waist ratio = shoulder circumference ÷ waist circumference. Measure the shoulders by running the tape horizontally around the widest part of the deltoids with your arms hanging relaxed — do not flare them. Measure the waist at its narrowest point, usually just above the navel. Keep both in the same unit. Note that some sources use shoulder *width* (the straight biacromial distance) instead of circumference, which produces a much smaller number — do not mix the two definitions.

What is the Adonis index (1.618)?

The Adonis index sets shoulder circumference at 1.618 times waist circumference — the golden ratio, phi. The number comes from classical sculpture proportion and was later adopted by fitness culture as the "ideal physique" target. Ratios near 1.6 do score highest in preference research, but this is an aesthetic convention, not a health metric: falling short of 1.618 indicates nothing about your body’s function.

How do you improve your V-taper?

Both numbers can move. Growing the shoulders means training the lateral delts (lateral raises, overhead pressing) and lat width (pull-ups, rows) — outside of your skeleton that is the only way to genuinely widen the upper body. Shrinking the waist comes mainly from fat loss, since waist girth includes both visceral and subcutaneous fat; heavy loaded side bends or aggressive ab hypertrophy can actually thicken it. Clavicle length and pelvic width are skeletal and set your ceiling.
